No. 3.5: A Bit of Self Study

The wonderful thing about the internet is that information is readily available right at your fingertips. In working from home I have spent more time in my living room than ever. I have had to find new ways to obtain information. Before, there were just a handful of outlets I would use. Now I not only use additional platforms but I've expanded the type of content I view.

Anything you want to know is accessible to you on the internet. I have spent a lot of time viewing or reading “how to’s”. Topics that I may have been interested in had already been researched so I didn’t have to do the bulk of the work. Just simply take notes. If there was anything I wanted to learn how to do I simply could do a quick YouTube search resulting in a demonstration of some sort of creative, artsy work. There were also those free online classes through EdX. Courses covering architecture and the concept of tangible history were offered on a weekly basis for free 99!

Finally all of the books I kept from my college days were put to use. I dusted off a couple and cracked them open. Refreshing my mind of architectural styles and construction materials. This helped guide me through my course lessons while in the graduate certificate program for Historic Preservation through the University of Kentucky.

Taking the time to do a little self study kept me productive during my off time. It reassured my interest in preservation work. In addition to this, having access to material to study was a reminder to start where I was at. At times I was so focused on the future and what I thought I should be doing that I would miss the fact that I had all of the resources I needed right in front of me.

Sometimes that's all it takes.Start where you are at and grow from there.
